Arsenal transfer news: Gunners want to sign out-of-favour Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl
Arsenal are keen on bringing Julian Weigl to English football in the January transfer window, according to reports.Weigl, the Germany midfielder, was a few years ago rated as one of the best young players in the European game.Weigl has yet to live up to the superb potential he displayed a couple of years ago1
Weigl has yet to live up to the superb potential he displayed a couple of years ago
He starred for Borussia Dortmund upon joining the club in 2015, and made his debut for the national side at the end of that campaign. The expectation was that Weigl would go on to become one of the best midfield players in the game, but his progression has somewhat stalled in the years since. The 23-year-old has especially struggled this season under Lucien Favre, who was appointed BVB manager earlier this year. Weigl has made just three Bundesliga appearances to date, totalling only 150 minutes of league football after 11 matchdays. He’s also appeared in the Champions League and the DFB-Pokal, but the youngster is clearly playing a reduced role; it appears he is the fourth choice for two central midfield positions.

Julian Weigl's career

  • 2013/14: 1860 Munich – 14 apps / 0 goals
  • 2014/15: 1860 Munich – 26 apps / 0 goals
  • 2015/16: Borussia Dortmund – 51 apps / 0 goals
  • 2016/17: Borussia Dortmund – 42 apps / 1 goal
  • 2017/18: Borussia Dortmund – 33 apps / 1 goal
  • 2018/19 (to date): Borussia Dortmund – 6 apps / 1 goal
Weigl’s lack of game time and potential availability have alerted clubs from across the continent, and Sport BILD says Arsenal have shown strong interest in signing him in January. However, it is further claimed that Dortmund are unlikely to sell Weigl when the transfer window reopens in just over a month as Favre is unwilling to reduce his squad’s depth halfway through a season.
