Jurgen Klopp’s men had their chances including when Sadio Mane hitting the post in the first-half and the resulting goalmouth scramble somehow saw City clear the danger. However, the home side were better on the night and have condemned Liverpool to their first Premier League defeat of the season, while also cutting their lead at the top of the table to four points. So what went wrong for the leaders? Below you can see talkSPORT.com’s Liverpool player ratings.

Alisson Becker – 6

The keeper made an excellent save to deny Aguero on 81 minutes and can’t really be blamed for Aguero or Sane’s goals due to the sheer ferocity of the first one and the brilliant accuracy of the second.Alisson made this excellent save to keep the Reds in it5

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 5

Alexander-Arnold had a miserable day in his last Premier League visit to the Etihad and had a better time of it tonight. He provided the killer ball which led to Firmino’s goal but was forced to track Aguero and leave space open for Sane in the lead up to the winner.

Dejan Lovren – 3

Generally, Lovren played well but he lost concentration at vital moments. He was caught napping for the first goal when Aguero went down his blindside before firing home and then the defender was playing Sterling onside in the build-up to Sane’s goal.An evening to forget for Lovren even though he played pretty well at points5

Virgil van Dijk – 6

Van Dijk was fantastic as usual and it’s not a surprise that Aguero latched himself onto the not as good Lovren which certainly helped the City striker get more success.

Andy Robertson – 7

Robertson was locked in an intriguing battle with Raheem Sterling and didn’t let the winger in behind once. He also got the assist for Firmino’s goal, laying the ball on a plate for the Brazilian to head home.

Jordan Henderson – 5

Recalled to the starting XI, Henderson gave a reasonable account of himself but didn’t have as much control of the City midfield as much as he, Milner and Wijnaldum would have liked.

James Milner – 5

You know what you’re going to get with James Milner – maximum effort. However, the midfielder looked a bit lethargic when City got their passing game going in midfield. He was rightly taken off for Fabinho on 57 minutes.

Georginio Wijnaldum – 4

The Dutchman has been phenomenal this season but tonight he was pretty quiet. However, a lot of this was due to the brilliance of Fernandinho, who was the best player on the pitch. Subbed off for Sturridge late as the Reds searched for an equaliser.

Mohamed Salah – 5

Salah had a couple of chances to get on the scoresheet – the first he couldn’t quite get a touch on the ball after Mane hit the post and the second chance he forced a good save from Ederson when taking on the shot from an acute angle.John Stones did brilliantly to clear the danger – the ball apparently 11mm away from fully going over the line!5
John Stones did brilliantly to clear the danger – the ball apparently 11mm away from fully going over the line!

Sadio Mane – 5

The forward had the first big chance of the game when he hit the post and that was about as good as it got for Mane. He was subbed off for Shaqiri after City retook the lead as Liverpool looked for some added freshness going forward.

Roberto Firmino – 6

Did a nice flick in the lead up to the huge Mane chance but had a quiet first-half. Firmino came alive to get Liverpool’s equaliser though. An easy finish but it was not enough to save them from defeat.Firmino celebrates his equalising goal5

SUB – Fabinho – 6

The Brazilian changed the course of the game when he came on early in the second-half but his impact wore off after Sane scored.

SUB – Xherdan Shaqiri – 4

Came on shortly after Sane scored but Shaqiri really struggled to acclimatise to the pace and intensity of the game.

SUB – Daniel Sturridge – N/A

Thrown on in the final few minutes but didn’t have enough time to make any kind of impact.
