Rangers Under-17s have become the first British side to win the Alkass International Cup after beating AS Roma in the final in Qatar.The Light Blues, who had one of the youngest squads at the tournament, beat the Italian side 9-8 in a nerve-wracking penalty shootout after the game finished 1-1.
#AlkassIntlCup2019 pic.twitter.com/hlKt6U6TV4— Rangers Youth Academy (@RFC_Youth) February 15, 2019The winning penalty was scored by Kai Kennedy, who was subsequently named as player of the tournament.Rangers got off to a bad start when Mory Bamba headed Roma into the lead but some excellent work from Nathan Young-Coombes set up Ciaran Dickson to level the game.The tournament saw twelve teams competewith Aspire Academy, Real Madrid, Paris St Germain, AS Roma, Bayern Munich, Spartak Moscow, Kashiwa Reysol, Raja Club Athletic, Altinordu FK, Etoile Sportive Du Sahel and Suwon Bluewings taking part alongside the Gers this year. Gers coach David McCallum said: When you get to penalties its very much anyones game. I think we have to congratulate Roma on a terrific final and hopefully it was an enjoyable one for everyone to watch.We would love to come back. You just need to look around you and consider the experience that the players have had, the quality of games that theyd played and the excellent facilities and way that weve been treated.
