6Read every word of Mauricio Pochettinos Tottenham press conferencePrior to the tie, Pochettino was quizzed by reporters on subjects ranging from the futures of Christian Eriksen and Mousa Dembele, to Manchester Citys blockbuster match with Liverpool. The Tottenham chief also responded to claims his side must win some silverware this season and Neil Warnocks barb about their new stadium.Heres every word of what Pochettino had to say at his pre-match press conference.
6Tottenham star Christian Eriksen is in talks over a new contractOn Eriksen’s contract“Football is dynamic. It’s about interests the manager sometimes can’t manage. Eriksen is important to us. You’d like this type of player with you, but it’s a negotiation. It would be fantastic if he commits long-term but he has every right to do what he wants.”
On Dembele’s contractThere is still no news. No news, again like Christian Eriksen, a different situation, it is not only in our hands. In that business there are different parties that are involved, then it is about to negotiate, to talk, and see what the different parties want.
On if Dembele could leave this monthI dont know, that is going to be a club decision, of course involved with the player and the people that are with him. At the moment I dont have any news.
6Man City take on Liverpool tonight and Tottenham will certainly be interestedOn Man City vs LiverpoolWere going to try to enjoy the game. I said before its a game to enjoy in a neutral position. What happens happens and well be there close. But my interest tonight is to try to enjoy the game. But its not in my hands. Im not going to suffer for that. Im going to try to enjoy the game, I cannot affect the game. What happens happens. In case Liverpool win, or City, or draw, either way is going to be okay, not a problem. We need to be focused on us. If they deserve to win tonight and the gap is nine points its because they are better and deserve to be in that position. In the last press conference I said the real contenders are Manchester City and Liverpool. I think we are there because we deserve to be there, but we need to show more consistency and deserve to be there at the end of the season. If you are capable of being consistent the whole season then maybe we are there fighting at the end of the season, but Liverpool or Manchester City are more real contenders than us.
6Tottenham beat Cardiff 3-0 last time outOn Warnock saying Spurs should play all remaining home games at Wembley this season not their new stadiumI think Neil is a very nice guy. I have a great affection for him but in that point that is our decision. Its going to be our decision.I told Daniel [Levy, Spurs chairman] in the moment that we can move we must move. Its going to be an advantage for us rather than a disadvantage for us. I think its going to be a massive boost for us to play in our new stadium. My thought is that it will be the opposite [to what Warnock said]. To play in our new stadium will be a massive boost for our players and the fans. Its going to be a fantastic thing for us.Look what happened at Wembley, we lost against Wolves. You can win or lose in different stadiums. Sure its going to be easier for us to create a better atmosphere in our new stadium because its going to be our home.
6Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham face Tranmere in the FA CupOn quick turnaround between matchesIts another thing that in this season we need to fight against. But we are so positive and so optimistic. We take it in a very good way. Its a massive challenge, a positive challenge for us. We are going to compete. We are a person, a coaching staff who always try to see the positive things in everything that we are going to face. That is another challenge, opening the possibility to play different players, to be involved. Players who we believe need to rest are going to rest to be available for the semi-final against Chelsea on Tuesday.I think we are going to be competitive tomorrow, we are going to have a very good team in place. We need to be sure that we show our best face, competitive and right attitude, that is going to be key to playing this competition, the FA Cup, a magic competition. The different level that we are in different leagues, but in that competition if youre not right and dont take it in the right way you can struggle. Look last season against Newport or Rochdale and we had to play the replays. That is why we know very well that if were not in our best its going to be a very difficult game.
6The FA Cup returns this weekendOn the importance of winning a trophy this season“For many people it’s so important for us to win. For me, of course it’s important, like for the players and the club, to win a trophy. It will show we are in a good position, and of course it’s going to be good for our egos. But always I told you, the club need to first of all be consistent in the top four and then think about challenging for trophies. When you add that you need to finish your facilities, like the training ground or the new stadium, you add difficult things. But I think we are in a good way. Of course I accept the different opinions, but I’m not sure whether winning the Carabao Cup or FA Cup is going to change the character of the club.”
